Update Tuesday, June 25, 2019I managed to get my Elgato Key Light working with the Elgato Control Center apps for macOS, iOS, and Windows, but I had never added an accessory device to a network before, so I did not find the process intuitive or the instructions clear. Alas, even after getting the light added and the software running the softwares user interface seems clunky and unreliable with functionality hidden on the other side of a menu bar icon and sliders that sometimes seem to fall out of sync with the light itself. Beyond basic reliability improvements the desktop and mobile versions of the software could all benefit from a proper UX design review to improve clarity of information and ease of use e.g., enabling users to reach functionality with fewer clicks by offering normal or even alwaysontop windows and saved settings. As I had never before added an accessory device to a network I had also never before configured a router to allow such a device to work across connection types, but that is an important thing to be able to do when mixing an Elgato Key Light, which ONLY supports 2.4 GHz WiFi, with devices on higher bandwidth connections, such as gaming or streaming systems on 5 GHz WiFi or Ethernet. After getting my Elgato Key Light running on my private network which in my case required me to configure my router to allow the lights MAC address I am now able to access it from devices running macOS, iOS, and Windows whether they are connected via 2.4 GHz WiFi, 5 GHz WiFi, or Ethernet. There may be better solutions for other networks or use cases, but connecting my computers, phone, and light to the same private network seems likely to meet my needs for now. This is a decent first attempt from Elgato, but I hope they improve their software.Original Review Monday, June 10, 2019Pretty Much Useless Elgato Software Does Not Work for MeBy itself, the Elgato Key Light turns on and off, but thats itit doesnt offer any brightness or color controls whatsoever. Supposedly, it relies upon software control, but that software control does not actually seem to work. The Elgato Control Center for macOS doesnt seem to do anything except consume system resources. Activity Monitor shows it running, but it doesnt open a window to do so much as provide information let alone control the Key Light. The iOS app displays a No Accessory Found message along with some strange directions that appear to be the product of sloppy technical writing andor sloppy translation, but the app does not seem to offer any setup functionality.Since the necessary software doesnt seem to actually do anything, Key Light seems useless beyond its factorydefault brightness and color. Not recommended.
